Field Notes 1

Sabrina, I don’t want to alarm you, but I’ve noticed some peculiar things about Ellie.

  1. She makes little squeaks and coos when she is asleep, like the small fragile mammal she is.
  2. As she drifts from her deep sleep, she startles, throwing both arms up and slowly lowering them, like the baby Frankenstein’s monster she is.
  3. The more she wakes up, the more she fusses, but if I hold her little monkey paw (that’s what her hands are, you know), she quiets right back down.
  4. During diaper changes, she splays her knees out and tucks her feet almost up to her belly, like the frog she is.
  5. When she is outside, she stares up at the sky out of her huge granite-blue eyes and falls silent.

I am indebted to you for your attention to these points and trust your observations can shed more light on the matter.

Yours, etc.

B
